The refurbishment of Building 5, Block A and B of The University of Technology Sydney, sought to create a “next generation” style learning space to suit the contemporary student.

This open plan environment incorporates state-of-the-art technology within a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere.

Featuring outdoor learning spaces, informal discussion areas and a union shop, the space is congruent to collaborative learning and self-directed education, which has become the way of today’s University student.

Medland Metropolis designed specialised electrical fittings to enable the space to facilitate the many and varied computing devices required. Additional power outlets meant innovative electrical design was necessary to ensure services were carefully concealed.

Lack of ceiling space made it necessary to turn the air conditioning units into features rather than concealing them. This required a great deal of coordination between all disciplines to ensure that the plant would fit within the space without sacrificing aesthetics.

The result has exceeded the University’s expectations. It is a highly successful environment as is demonstrated by the extensive number of students at work and play within the previously un-utilised space.
