Shangri-La Cairns

The Shangri-La Hotel project in Cairns saw the construction of 36 new 5 star hotel guestrooms, a new restaurant opening onto the refurbished boardwalk, a new Horizon Club, Executive Lounge and the refurbishment of a new foyer.
Originally constructed in the late 1980s, the aim was to provide contemporary facilities and an entirely new atmosphere for the new Hotel operators.
Medland Metropolis worked in partnership with Watermark to design; document and contract administer the Electrical, Mechanical, Hydraulic and Fire engineering services.
The challenge for this project was working within the limitations of the existing infrastructure as the building works had to be undertaken without disrupting the operation of the existing Hotel.
The new Hotel Guestrooms were created on the Mezzanine level which was previously a retail area of the complex.
A new raised floor system was installed to facilitate new drainage requirements without impacting the existing retail outlets on the ground floor.
Significant upgrades to the fire alarm systems were undertaken to meet current code requirements and a substantial upgrade of the building power supply addressed previous operational supply restrictions.
The result was a new improved appearance with increased facilities of the Shangri-La Hotel which have proved to be a great success for the operators, bringing a new lease of life to the facility which now operates at far higher occupancy levels.
