Google Inc. is a world renowned internet and software corporation.  Creativity & innovation are central to this company’s success and it was therefore crucial for Medland Metropolis to produce a creative brief that was sensitive to this client’s needs, creating an environment that was not only comfortable & authentic but encouraged progressive thinking.  To achieve this we were heavily involved from the outset. We carried out a pre-acquisition survey and report prior to the lease being signed and once the building was approved we were heavily involved in the design & installation process.  We ensured coordination between the design team was upheld and guaranteed a heavy onsite presence throughout construction.

Unlike a typical office building there were no suspended ceilings or raised access flooring, all services were visible creating an industrial feel to the space.  Lighting and coordination of services were therefore paramount in the creative design of the space to ensure the desired look & feel was achieved. Through ensuring the lighting design employed low energy lighting sources, daylight monitoring for control of the perimeter lighting and maximising the use of occupancy control, the project design met the LEED Gold criteria.  Similarly, we employed water saving devices on all outlets to optimise water usage and specified a three pipe VRV Heating / Cool system to maximise control of environmental spaces and to minimise wastage of energy. Along with the architect, Google’s AV and IT specialists we coordinated and integrated the IT systems, including the design of the new communications room, and integrated the AV systems throughout the building.

Working within the restraints of a seven story office block and a tight construction programme, the Medland Metropolis team had to work closely with the main contractor in relation to specification of plant and equipment, procurement, timescales and detailed coordination of the visible services.  There was great team effort from within the Medland Metropolis studio and all levels of staff, from Managing Director to intermediate engineers, were drafted in for their input. This ensured our designs were innovative, fresh and thoroughly executed.
